Canonical has decided to retire the Ubuntu Netbook Remix – as a named product. The Netbook Remix was a personal favorite of mine, as it made it easy for me to point my netbook friends at it, as an easy replacement for whatever OS was installed by default on their device.

I was using Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my EeePC at last year’s FOSDEM, dual-booting with Mac OS X. Since Ubuntu 10.04 it’s been renamed Ubuntu Netbook Edition, so time for a reinstall and new road test.

The computer came with Windows 7 starter and it felt slower and full of unnecessary things, so I decided to change it to Ubuntu (well, I wanted to to the change even if Windows was fast).
Being the M$ anti-fanboy that I am, I did not even boot the netbook into the Windows 7 Starter’s Edition that came pre-installed*. Instead I booted off my USB flash key into UNR 10.04.

Linux is the operating system of choice for devices with ARM processors. Unfortunately problems with graphics appear in most cases. Ubuntu wants to fix this with a new GUI.

The Ubuntu 9.10 (“Karmic Koala”) beta won a positive review from eWEEK, while InfoWorld reports on the server edition’s capability for developing private clouds that are compatible with Amazon EC2.
