This release will happen in April 2010 and is much anticipated by users across the globe. I have installed the Alpha of 10.4 and have been using it for a while now. It is time to offer up my impressions of what is to come to those wacky Ubuntu fan boys and girls.

BostonPeng on the blog “I’m Just an Avatar” writes: “While I snagged the disk image pretty quickly it wasn’t until Friday a week ago that I was able to actually get a chance to fire up the LiveCD long enough to see how well it played with my system.”

I’ve had the Karmic development release running since Alpha 2. I started with it because it supported some newer hardware on the Asus 1008HA netbook and that machine is not as critical as my desktop is for work so I could afford for it to go wrong occasionally. Although it has been only very occasionally.

The Ubuntu 9.10 (“Karmic Koala”) beta won a positive review from eWEEK, while InfoWorld reports on the server edition’s capability for developing private clouds that are compatible with Amazon EC2. Meanwhile, ArsTechnica found the developer’s version of Ubuntu Moblin Remix to be “promising” but “rough.”

The look and feel of the startup process is completely different than what a Ubuntu user would be accustomed to, and it’s not all just cosmetic, there is one major improvement.

My first impression is that it is good stuff–seriously good stuff. From the new, updated installer to the faster boot times, I’m impressed. Way to go Ubuntu developers, you deserve applause for this one.

Based on my early look at Karmic Koala, Ubuntu 9.10, I think we’ve got a very strong Linux desktop distribution coming down the way.

While I would consider Karmic Koala to be an evolutionary improvement rather than a revolutionary one over Jaunty Jackalope and Intrepid Ibex where functionality is concerned, I can certainly see where a great deal of the development time went, and that is raw performance.

I didn’t start out liking Ubuntu, but over the past few years Mark Shuttleworth’s baby has grown up and become a force to be reckoned with in the Linux desktop arena.

Let me tell you, my newest computer is 5 years old and Ubuntu runs superbly, giving me sharper looks and animations, sexier than a Mac fanboi’s wet dream.

Although it’s still a little ways from release, I decided to give Ubuntu 9.04 a spin. Right now, development is “somewhere” between Beta and RC status, and things seem to be going quite well.

I upgraded my previous version of ubuntu to 9.04 beta. The problem I had with Ubuntu 8.10 was that wireless manager was not working properly and it took me a while to figure it out.

I just couldn’t wait for the 24th of April and decided to upgrade Intrepid to the present Alpha version of Jaunty yesterday. After downloading some 1300 mb’s and then taking up another hour to complete all the modifications, my computer restarted.

With each new release of Ubuntu the Open Source Linux Distribution based on Debian gets better and better. In this latest beta version of the upcoming 9.04 release dubbed “Jaunty Jackalope” they continue to build on the polish of previous releases.

Installing Ubuntu on the Dell Mini 9 was never hard, but getting everything working was. Ubuntu 9.04 Beta does not require any extra fixes or patches.

With this beta release everything should be shaping up nicely, and (theoretically) the work from this point onwards should be bug-fixing and polish. Let’s find out how the release is shaping up.

New versions of Ubuntu – which are released every six months – are always eagerly awaited by Linux fans as they tend to include a decent selection of new features. Jaunty Jackalope will include fewer major changes than many previous releases but will still add some sparkle to the desktop.

I figured it was about time to try and install it, partly because I’m interested to see how well it currently runs on my dual-head setup, partly because I need to write an article on installing it for Linux Identity
