If you are currently using Ubuntu 10.04 and are interested in 10.10 you have choices – you can burn yourself an ISO and do a complete, fresh installation, OR you can upgrade using apt-get without having to bother with a re-installation.

I have just one question to ask: why is it being released at all? What major changes are present to justify an upgrade? If all that the new version has to show is incremental changes in version numbers of major applications, why is there the need for so much hoo-haa?

Reading the Ubuntu Planet today, I came across a post which mentions a new “feature” that is going to be in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat: Evolution, the default Ubuntu email client will automatically add a “Sent from Ubuntu” signature to the emails you send.

I just updated to the latest Ubuntu 10.10 desktop and noticed that boot time is now extremely fast! My Intel Core 2 Duo 2.80GHz laptop with an Intel SSD now boots in 8.6 seconds! That is from boot loader all the way to logged in and ready to use! Nice work Ubuntu

For Maverick Meerkat we’re continuing improving the ARM support for Ubuntu. With Lucid we got the first release optimized for ARMv7 (Thumb2 and SoftFP but not NEON), and for Maverick the plan is to keep the same ARM optimizations as base, but improving board support and user experience.

Canonical planned on introducing Btrfs support in the upcoming Ubuntu release, i.e. Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. They even said that it might be the default filesystem in Maverick. According to a recent update in the Ubuntu Btrfs Support blueprints, Btrfs will not make it to Maverick.

Maverick Meerkat, as the 10.10 release will be known, is adding support for multi-touch of all kinds – it may be that Apple devices like the mouse and touchpad will be fully supported by the enthusiastic development team on Meerkat before anyone makes some drivers that allow those items to be used on Windows 7.

Canonical and Mark Shuttleworth proudly announced a few minutes ago that the upcoming Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) operating system will have support for gestures, with multi-touch. This is possible via Ubuntu’s uTouch 1.0 gesture and multi-touch stack.

Using this new installer for Ubuntu 10.10 also supports specifying network connection information for easy wireless setup and Ubuntu package updates can also be installed automatically. We tried out this new installer over the weekend using an Ubuntu daily LiveCD. Ubuntu’s alternate/server installer is unchanged.
