New versions of Ubuntu – which are released every six months – are always eagerly awaited by Linux fans as they tend to include a decent selection of new features. Jaunty Jackalope will include fewer major changes than many previous releases but will still add some sparkle to the desktop.

The six-month schedule is still there in the latest releases, but it seems there will be almost no new end-user features in the 9.04 release of Ubuntu, at least according to the 9.04 blueprints and the Jaunty Jackalope alpha releases I’ve seen so far.

Due out tomorrow is the fifth alpha release for Ubuntu 9.04 (the Jaunty Jackalope). Ubuntu 9.04 is now in a feature freeze so there isn’t much to expect in Jaunty Alpha 5, but there are a few items worth highlighting.

I have spent a lot of time this weekend trying to get Ubuntu 8.10 installed on my HP 2133 Mini-Note. I couldn’t even get the LiveCD to bring up the GUI properly, the X server just wouldn’t work, and I tried everything I know, and some things I don’t know.

A month ago we compared Intel’s graphics performance between Ubuntu 8.10 and the latest Ubuntu 9.04 daily snapshot at the time. However, with many new graphics packages having been released since then, we have carried out some additional tests this morning to look at where the Intel Linux graphics performance stands today.

In April the Ubuntu development team will release the latest version of its operating system, codenamed Jaunty Jackalope. This release, officially known as Ubuntu 9.04, is expected to consolidate many of the changes begun in the last release in October, called Intrepid.
