After those Linux file-system benchmarks were published, we received a request from Canonical to look at the EXT3 performance too. With that said, we have done just that and have published EXT3, EXT4, and Btrfs benchmarks from Ubuntu 9.10 and a Ubuntu 10.04 development snapshot from an Intel Atom netbook.

To celebrate the stabilization and release of Ubuntu 9.04, I’ve destabilized my primary (work and personal) laptop a bit by migrating from ext3 to ext4, following (more or less) the procedure I found on the ext4 wiki.

One of the more controversial aspects of the Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope release is the use of the ext4 filesystem. Users have apparently lost important data already while testing Ubuntu on their desktop.

Ext4, the next generation of Linux’s Ext3 filesystem, is now available in the latest Ubuntu 9.04 installer images. Ext4 was officially declared stable in version 2.6.28 of the Linux kernel, which was released last month.
