The most popular mobile operating system is Android. One of the most popular non-Windows operating systems is Canonical’s Ubuntu. And, Google’s is really pushing its Chrome OS-powered Chromebooks in the retail market. What does all this have in common? Each operating system is based on Linux and neither Google nor Canonical is mentioning that fact.

Microsoft announced Wednesday that Azure, technically a cloud-based IaaS (infrastructure as a service) platform, will host not only Windows Azure but provide images for a number of Linux variants as well, namely SuSE, CentOS, Red Hat and Ubuntu.

Ubuntu developer Canonical is offering a new Micro servers provisioning and management tool named Metal as a Service (MaaS). The new tool aims to provide easier access and management to bulky Ubuntu Micro servers. Canonical plans to launch the tool along with second Ubuntu 12.04 beta.

Two years ago in March of 2010, Mark Shuttleworth stepped down as CEO of Canonical Ubuntu Linux. Shuttleworth moved aside to deal with the strategic technical issues of the project and his Chief Operating Office Jane Silber stepped up to become the CEO.
