The desktop version of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS has now officially reached its end of life as previously reported. From 12 May 2011 (yesterday), no new updates, including security updates and critical fixes, will be available.
Ubuntu announced its 8.04 Desktop release almost 36 months ago, on April 24, 2008. For the LTS Desktop releases, Ubuntu committed to ongoing security and critical fixes for a period of 36 months.

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, is pinning its hopes of OEM acceptance on the Lucid Lynx. We’ve put the screws to this new Long Term Support (LTS) release, comparing it to Canonical’s previous LTS release, 8.04 Hardy Heron, to look for progress.

If you wanna test the new Plone alpha release (Plone4.0alpha1) you’d need a 2.6 installation. If you are using your VPS and 8.04 LTS as your rock OS, you won’t want to upgrade just for the python version.
