Open Source Code Priority Should Begin at Security, then Quality, then Performance

Here’s an interview with Jono Bacon, the Ubuntu Community Manager who also leads a small team at Canonical to grow and enable the Ubuntu community. More here

Q. What can proprietary software vendors learn from open source to advance code quality?

A. From a technical code quality perspective, proprietary software houses can learn a lot from the distributed open source model, such as how a community can refine the quality of its code when it has a solid onramp for contributions and a means of collaborating together effectively.

OSS and proprietary software will evolve in parallel, but proprietary software houses are going to need to embrace open source more as the industry demands it. Countering this idea, I do see more and more open source projects, platforms and products shipping commercial service opportunities for their users, so the growth prospects are exciting for both.
