Ubuntu's developers like to refer to it as “Linux for humans”, and indeed it's easier to set up and use than many other distros. However, even though it has made great strides in usability, it's still Linux.

I really liked VirtualBox and got a lot of use out of it when running my old Windows XP system under Ubuntu. However, the lack of support for 64-bit systems proved too problematic.

Ubuntu 8.04 was released a few days back and like the previous releases of Ubuntu,Ubuntu 8.04 does not include a number of essential codecs, applications etc because of number of licensing restrictions and also the limitation of accommodating more and more applications on a single CD.

Erins knowledge of computers is limited to word processors, spreadsheets, Photoshop and a reasonable amount of browsing on the Web. Fairly standard stuff for a university philosophy student. All I did to the system (before leaving Erin at the log-in screen) was to install it and create a user account for her.
