For the first few projects I was using a VIA EPIA MII10000 motherboard with an embedded 1.0GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM. This worked well with lightweight versions of Linux and even Ubuntu, but it did not offer the power I wanted for future projects.

About a month ago I got a new laptop at work. A nice one (or at least, nicer than my old one) — a Lenovo ThinkPad T60p. I installed PartitionMagic 8.0, shrank the XP partition down to 65GB and carved out 35GB to install Ubuntu.
